Modular partners with SeaGrown, a UK pioneer in Seaweed farming

At the start of 2024, Modular were invited to partnering with the SeaGrown team to scope and develop a number of bespoke tools to help them develop their business and scale up UK offshore seaweed production and beyond. 

Based on the Yorkshire Coast, SeaGrown is curating a bold and innovative new marine industry for the UK. SeaGrown is the very first seaweed farm in the UK to embark upon offshore seaweed farming by growing kelp in the coastal waters of the North Sea, allowing them to produce a sustainable crop all year round. 

Seaweed is one of nature’s super substances

Seaweed farming benefits our environment and helps us tackle the three planetary crises as identified by  United Nations Environment Programme – biodiversity loss, pollution and climate change.

Seaweed has two superpowers. Not only does it produce oxygen and a healthy productive underwater habitat, allowing sealife to thrive, increasing marine life and biodiversity, it is also a powerful agent for natural carbon sequestration.

Seaweed is a powerhouse of carbon capture, absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to mitigate climate change. If seaweed was grown over 9% of the ocean it would take up all of the carbon that has been emitted by humankind.

The beauty of seaweed is that is thrives without the need for power, chemicals or land mass – the only sustenance it requires is light, fresh sea water and the bountiful nutrients the sea water holds. The potential for growth is huge. The benefits phenomenal.

Having established a framework for offshore seaweed farming, SeaGrown are now looking to introduce a number of systems and processes that allows them to effectively harness the data generated on the farm to improve production.
