Though our work with with Future Publishing on PC Gamer and Edge Online we were approached by an entrepreneur who wanted to create a network site for gaming fans as well as online communities around various groups of gamers.
To create an intuitive platform where PC games fans can access editorial content as new games are released and submit their own content. Effectively to design a website within a website where all news, feeds, submitted links and videos relating to that game can be read in one place.
Through workshops and stakeholder engagement we built rapid prototypes for testing the site’s structure and layout. We also created a brand identity and unique visual language for the site. As with all of our projects we produced extensive wireframes and interactive prototypes to explore layout, user journeys and interactivity. Interactive prototypes allowed us to test ideas with real users, gleaning valuable insights that saved time later in the design build process. We employed a predominantly neutral feel to the website due to the quantity of advertising that the layout needed to accommodate. Depending on the current campaign the content is often at risk of being swamped. By keeping the background of the article areas white we were able to clearly define areas between the advertising units.
Network N is a publishing platform and PCGamesN being was its first title. In order to ensure consistency with each new title deployment we were also commissioned to create a comprehensive branding and web style guide. The guide covers everything from how to create new title mastheads, instructions for advertising positioning, grid systems, typography and colour rules through to the UX guidelines for creating interactive elements. We also implemented a load testing strategy on the final site to prepare the site to cope with large spikes in traffic.

We created a flexible brand identity that would allow for many sub brands to be produced quickly. We developed a mechanism that collates content by game title, allowing visitors to digest all their favourite gaming news in one place. We designed a highly successful website with multiple publishers, the business is now in its fourth year with continuing advertising deals supporting the development of numerous gaming communities. the load testing strategy succeeded with the site handling a 50,000 user spike in traffic four weeks after launch.
